Over The River and Through the Woods Race Series

Over the River and Through the Woods 5k Trail Race

at the Vielmetti-Peters Reserve

Presented by Green Timber Forestry Consultants

and supported by sponsors Ore Dock Brewing Company and Marquette Food Co-Op,  as well as the office of Brogan and Yonkers, Queen City Running, Hiawatha Telephone Company, and La Dolce Video!

Thank you, everyone!

This year’s race and silent auction was an incredible success! You raised $2,991 that will be put towards installing signs, maintaining trails, and taking care of the Vielmetti-Peters Reserve and other areas that UPLC owns across the UP. We passed our goal to be able to produce signs designed by NMU students! Woo! Look for those to show up at the end of summer!

If you enjoyed this race, please tell your friends and family–we will be continuing our partnership with NMU and getting design input from students through the next school year, and will need your help again next spring!

Here are the race times for 2017:

More photos coming soon! You got some? Send them my way!

Racers took off from the end of Brickyard Road on May 20th and were congratulated with dinner and prizes upstairs at the Ore Dock. We also had a silent auction with wonderful donated items from your favorite local venues!

All proceeds from the annual races support the UPLC’s mission to responsibly steward all of the properties we protect–that is, have helpful signs, trails that are well marked and taken care of, science-based monitoring that supports sustainable decision-making…etc.

Event Description

5K trail run (or waterfall hike) along a scenic trail through the Vielmetti-Peters Reserve, just on the edge of the Queen City of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan–Marquette! Race downhill at the start, and then over the river on a footbridge before continuing through the woods while tackling several challenging hills. While you run, you’ll pass several signs that detail the unique flora and fauna of the area.  Be sure to visit the Reserve again to read them…unless you’re a speed reader! The race will take you around a large loop, retrace your steps, and then uphill to the second loop, which will give you an idea of your current standing before the final stretch back to the start–running downhill will help you pick up your pace–but the finish is a steep uphill, so dig in while the spectators cheer you across the finish line. The race will be followed by an after party and silent auction upstairs at the Ore Dock Brewery with free dinner for all race participants (donations accepted for family and friends to join you at the feast).

All proceeds go to support the UP Land Conservancy’s stewardship mission–making sure that properties we protect like the race course at the Vielmetti-Peters Reserve are taken care of and have adequate trail maintenance, signs and parking, and can be monitored to ensure that we are honoring our promise to protect land today for life tomorrow.
