Over The River and Through the Woods 5k Race

The 2020 Trail Race is cancelled
due to Covid-19 Pandemic

The race will be rescheduled when safe to hold public events.
Until then, the Vielmetti-Peters Conservation Reserve is open for public use: hiking, running, and walking.
Please review and follow safe social distancing guidelines.

Information about the Over the River and Through the Woods 5k Race:

All proceeds from the annual races support the UPLC’s mission to responsibly steward all of the properties we protect–that is, have helpful signs, trails that are well marked and taken care of, science-based monitoring that supports sustainable decision-making…etc. Last year, racers raised around $3,000!

Please show our sponsors some love! It’s because of them that the full amount of the race entry and silent auction proceeds will contribute directly to the permanent protection of land in the Upper Peninsula!

A huge thank you to 2019 sponsors:  Ore Dock Brewing Company (Gold level! Thank you!) and Art Unlimited (Silver level sponsors! Thank you!) Thrivent Financial (silver sponsors! Thank you!), and Queen City Running (Bronze sponsors! Thanks!)

Event Description

5K trail run (or guided waterfall hike) along a scenic trail through the Vielmetti-Peters Reserve, just on the edge of the Queen City of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan–Marquette! Race downhill at the start, and then over the river on a footbridge before continuing through the woods while tackling several challenging hills. While you run, you’ll pass several signs that detail the unique flora and fauna of the area.  Be sure to visit the Reserve again to read them…unless you’re a speed reader! The race will take you around a large loop, retrace your steps, and then uphill to the second loop, which will give you an idea of your current standing before the final stretch back to the start–running downhill will help you pick up your pace–but the finish is a steep uphill, so dig in while the spectators cheer you across the finish line. The race will be followed by an after party and silent auction upstairs at the Ore Dock Brewery with free dinner for all race participants (donations accepted for family and friends to join you at the feast).

All proceeds go to support the UP Land Conservancy’s stewardship mission–making sure that properties we protect like the race course at the Vielmetti-Peters Reserve are taken care of and have adequate trail maintenance, signs and parking, and can be monitored to ensure that we are honoring our promise to protect land today for life tomorrow.
