As land is rapidly being parceled and developed, changing hands, and experiencing the effects of climate change, UPLC is encountering an ever-growing need to accelerate our conservation efforts. In recent years, there has been a reenergized appreciation for the importance of natural spaces across the nation. Coupled with that, there is a shared sense of urgency to protect what defines life in the UP– the water, wildlife, and wild places we all love.

Potential projects have stacked up at UPLC, and each week there are new requests from families seeking our help in protecting the natural character of their land. Opportunities range from conservation easements that would protect critical wildlife corridors, conservation partnerships aiming to buffer miles of cold-water rivers, or co-managed nature preserves that prioritize threatened boreal habitats. With a small staff of three, and a scope across millions of acres, UPLC’s current capacity simply cannot meet the demand and opportunities alike in land protection during this pivotal time.
